Conductor Alex Roitman

The group is led by Alex Roitman, a bandoneonist disciple of Hector Del Curto.
Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Alex Roitman began playing the piano when he was seven years old. He has studied accordion with Peter Di Bono, San Francisco’s premier accordionist. During his accordion years, he enjoyed playing Klezmer, Italian, French musette and Russian music. His playing has been featured in Pure Piaf, a musical about the life of Edith Piaf.
Mr. Roitman’s passion for Argentine Tango led him to study the bandoneon, first on his own, then with Ville Hiltula, and finally with Hector Del Curto. As a bandoneonist, he performed locally in San Francisco with his previous band Tangonero. While living on the West Coast, Alex performed in San Francisco with his previous group Tangonero.

Mr. Roitman is a member of a Stowe Tango Music Festival tango orchestra, and a silver medalist of the 2022 Che Bandoneon International Competition (also a bronze medalists of 2018 and 2019). He shared the stage with legendary tango musicians such as Victor Lavallen, Horacio Cabarcos, Pablo Estigarribia, Jose Colangelo, Pablo Agri, Nicolas Ledesma, Humberto Ridolfi, Guillermo Rubino, Julio Pane and Nestor Marconi, as well as the members of Héctor Del Curto’s quintet. In addition to his bandoneon work, Mr. Roitman has composed several tango pieces, made original arrangements and continues to work on transcribing and arranging great tango music of the past. In the fall of 2020, he relocated to the East Coast, and currently splits his time between Boston Tango Orchestra in the summers and Alex Roitman Tango Ensemble in the winters.

SPECIAL WORKSHOP (outside program): LECTURE by Musician Alex Roitman

Topic:
Structure and Interpretation of Tango Music.

LECTURE will take place at Calo Room On Sunday April 20 at 12.30pm (60 min)

This presentation will explore different levels of tango music structure, going from sections to motifs to phrases and sub-phrases. The elements such as rhythm, melody, harmony, as well as dynamics, articulation and ornaments will be considered regarding the overall musicality and their specific use in tango. Similarly, the general music concepts such as call and response, counterpoint, contrasts, modulations, tempo changes etc will be shown through the prism of tango style. The tango-specific musical improvisation will be explained and compared to other genres like jazz. The multitude of music elements will be synthesized into higher-level concepts aligning with human emotions.

The material will be explained in layman terms, without requiring the knowledge of music theory. The concepts will be illustrated on tango recording excerpts. The suggestions will be presented as to how the dancers might decide to interpret the specific musical elements, with multiple options suggested for the same musical element or combination of elements. The dancer interpretation will also be considered with emotions as the main focus.
